Donegal farmers should review autumn compliance requirements, including using the slurry spreading extension to 7 October, submission of ACRES LESS declarations by 2 November, and any outstanding Department notifications. Soil sampling helps identify lime and nutrient requirements, improve fertiliser efficiency and support nutrient management and slurry import decisions. Autumn is a useful time to review your soil samples and arrange sampling where needed. Knowing your soil’s pH, phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) levels helps you make better fertiliser decisions and get more value from slurry and purchased fertiliser.
Soil sampling helps identify:
Lime requirements: Correcting soil pH helps grass and crops use nutrients more effectively.
Low phosphorus and potassium levels: These can limit growth, even where sufficient nitrogen is applied.
Fields with adequate nutrient levels: Targeting fertiliser where it is needed can reduce unnecessary expenditure.
Differences between fields: A field-specific plan supports more accurate slurry and fertiliser allocation.
Soil samples also support nutrient management and compliance. Results help assess phosphorus allowances and whether your holding has capacity to receive imported slurry. Having space in a tank does not, on its own, mean a farm can import slurry.
Before sampling, check the dates and coverage of your existing results with. Soil samples are valid for 5 years. Plan sampling around recent lime, fertiliser and slurry applications so that results provide a reliable basis for recommendations.
For Donegal farmers preparing for the next growing season, reviewing soil fertility now can help prioritise lime applications, plan nutrient use and manage fertiliser costs.
