In the face of rising energy costs and increasing pressure to reduce carbon footprints, Irish farmers are turning to an increasingly bright solution: solar power. Thanks to the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS 3), installing solar panels on farm buildings like sheds and stables is now more accessible — and affordable — than ever.

What Is the TAMS Solar Scheme?

The TAMS 3 Solar Capital Investment Scheme (SCIS) was launched by the Department of Agriculture to support on-farm renewable energy investments. Under this scheme, farmers can claim 60% grant aid, up to a maximum of €90,000 per holding.

Unlike some other support schemes, the solar grant is “ring-fenced” — meaning it doesn’t eat into your eligibility for other TAMS measures.

Why Install Panels on Farm Sheds?

Putting solar PV on your farm shed has several benefits:

  • Energy Cost Savings: By generating your own electricity, you can reduce your dependence on the grid and cut your power bills.
  • Carbon Footprint Reduction: Renewable energy helps your farm become greener and more sustainable, aligning with both national climate goals and consumer expectations.
  • High Capacity Eligible: Under TAMS 3, the maximum system size for grant aid is 62 kWp, which is significantly more than in older schemes.
  • Battery Support: You can also include battery storage in your system. The grant supports batteries up to 50% of the solar system’s size.
  • No Planning Headache (Often): In many cases, solar on rooftops of farm sheds doesn’t require planning permission — up to certain sizes.

What Irish Farmers Need Before Applying

To be approved for TAMS solar funding, you’ll need:

  • 12-month energy usage overview — Your system must match your farm’s electricity consumption.
  • A Department-approved solar installer — Only approved installers can complete TAMS-funded work.
  • Proper farm-shed roof condition — Your shed roof must be structurally suitable for solar.
  • A well-designed solar system — Orientation, shading, battery size, and inverter choice all impact returns.
